Poggie Good Will
Each year the Poggies also show their stewardship and commitment to helping the community where we go to fish. In the early years of the trip, several of the Poggies brought school supplies for the local elementary school that was very much in need. For the past several years, the Poggies have participated an opportunity that surfaced to help deserving local students go to high school. Unlike the U.S., Mexican students have to pay for high school. In a rural town such as La Ventana, this often means that deserving students go without education and the future that can provide. Through the generous donations of the Poggies, two students per year have been sponsored to go to high school. These are hardworking students with good grades and big dreams. By donating the “winnings” of the derby prizes, passing the hat, and other individual member contributions, the Poggies have raised hundreds of dollars per year toward this worthwhile cause.
Since 2007, members of the Kitsap Poggie Club have been venturing down to sunny Mexico for a wonderful annual fishing trip in an idyllic location. A special package price has been set up for our fun group fishing trip. It includes accommodations, all meals, boats & fishing.
Whether you love fly fishing of conventional fishing, this is the place to hook up in the fish trap known as the Sea of Cortez. These warm waters offer the chance to hook yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado, roosterfish, amberjack, marlin, sailfish, cabrilla, pargo and more.
The trip offers the very best, experienced captains and well-maintained boats with 4-stroke motors and bimini shade tops. Your catch can be deep-frozen to be put in your cooler to take home.
Finish your breakfast, walk down the stairs and get on your boat – it’s that easy.
Each year the group participates in a friendly “derby”, with prizes for the Biggest Tuna, the Biggest Dorado, the Biggest Wahoo, and the Biggest Fish overall. Come on down and earn a place on our permanent “Baja Showdown” awards plaque on the Palapas Ventana Restaurant wall.
Poggie Troy’s mom Karon and brother Tim run a fabulous year-round ocean adventure resort called Palapas Ventana in La Ventana Bay in the Sea of Cortez, Baja, Mexico.
Palapas Ventana is located just 35 minutes southeast of La Paz in a laid-back, safe and friendly town.
You know you are at Palapas Ventana when you see the palapa (palm frond) roofs of the quaint casitas overlooking the Sea of Cortez and Cerralvo Island. The beautifully constructed casitas are strategically set amongst native Baja desert plants. You’ll enjoy air-conditioned rooms, and purified water and ice. Every casita has a fantastic view!
Enjoy home-cooked meals at the resort’s scrumptious restaurant. The restaurant will even cook your catch or make sashimi or ceviche if requested! The bar on site offers beer on tap, margaritas, wifi, internet, phone, games and more. Relax in the on-site pool, hot tub or hammocks. Professional massage is also available on-site.
Snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, shopping trips, hiking, nightlife tours and other day trips are available. They also have world class spearfishing, kiteboarding, SCUBA and more activities through the year.
