GENERAL MEETING: September 8th, 7:00 PM is the date. Our location is the Sheridan Center, 680 Lebo Blvd. in East Bremerton.
Life Member Paul Dorn will be our speaker. Paul was responsible for starting the Gorst Creek Salmon Rearing Program and is very involved in reforming the state hatcheries. He can probably answer any questions we have about salmon.
BOARD MEETING: We will have a board meeting September 14th, 7:00 PM at the Windermere Real Estate Office, 9939 NW Mickelberry Rd. in Silverdale. All Poggies are welcome.
PICNIC: Our annual summer picnic was held on July 25th at Jarstad Park. It was a seafood lover’s delight with Rick Uhinck’s delicious barbecued sockeye salmon and also oysters on the half shell. Mary Lou Showman, Diane Altenburg and Fran Frederick fried butter clams, and other Poggies prepared steamer clams. As always, there were countless wonderful potluck dishes. Thanks to all those who donated seafood: the Suquamish Tribe (salmon), Gary Vanderwerf (clams) and Nick Blickhan (oysters).
Bidding was lively in the Silent Auction for antique bamboo fishing rods and other donated items, many from Poggie Tom Dorton’s estate. Proceeds from the auction came to $552, the most we have ever made. Glen Jurges did a great job putting it all together.
SINCLAIR DERBY: Our Sinclair Chinook Derby is scheduled for August 28th and 29th. This year weigh-in will be at Port Orchard Marina’s outer float with the awards ceremony under the credit union building in downtown Bremerton. Derby tickets are still $20 and cover both days. We expect to fill the 40 place ladder this year because we are past the effects of the fish-kill and there should be a lot more fish in Sinclair Inlet.
The tribe will pull their nets on Friday before the derby. The exception will be Little Richard’s net at the Head OfThe Bay.
Let’s all try for the top cash prizes. Last year Poggies did not make it above 9th place. We can do better than that.
BAJA TRIP: This year we will be going to Palapas Ventana again. It has fabulous fishing and beautiful Baja style relaxation. The trip will be 6 days and will include 4 days of fishing on a Pangas boat. Dates are October 11-16th. The $775 includes food and lodging, 4 days fishing and transportation to and from the La Paz Airport. Airfare on Alaska Airlines is separate. Poggie Troy Hatler says there are several openings left.
FISHING: The Chinooks are in local waters now with good catches reported at Point-No-Point, Jeff Head and Dolphin Point. Hood Canal is only open south of Ayock Point and Quilcene Bay. The entire canal will not open until October 16th.
In early August Life Member Poggie Clark Gardener passed away. He was Tom Dorton’s fishing partner for many years and they caught a lot of halibut together. Clark was 93. It is sad to see so many older Poggies leaving us.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Your Club has just recently concluded our membership drive for current members. Membership is slowly dropping. Do you know a friend who fishes? Get him/her to join in helping outdoor recreation in Kitsap and Mason Counties. You are our best recruiter!
CHRISTMAS PARTY: President Norm Reinhardt wants someone to volunteer to coordinate this year’s Christmas party.
