Meetings:
We have our meeting at 7:00 in the Sheridan Community Center
on the second Wednesday of the month September thru June. We have food at every other meeting,( pizza, chili, ect.). We have
a guest speaker three or four times a year at our meetings. The community center is located at 680 Lebo Blvd. in Bremerton,
Wa.
Fish Feeding:
We help raise salmon at Jarstad Park in Gorst,
Wa. Poggies feed fish in the raceways and the two rearing ponds, approx. two million fish. This project requires several volunteers
for most of the year.
Fishing Derby's:
Our first derby of the
year is the Blackmouth derby for the Bremerton, Wa. area. in Feb. Prizes are determined by amount of tickets sold and awarded
at the Brownsville Marina.
The Halibut derby is at Port Angeles. Wa. in June each year. Prizes are determined by the
amount of tickets sold.
Our biggest derby is our Salmon derby held in Aug. every year. This derby is open to the public
and is held in the Bremerton, Wa. area. The winner receives $1000.
Kids
Fishing Party:
Opening day of trout season the Poggie Club holds a kids fishing
party at Jarstad Park in Gorst, Wa. The club provides all the fishing gear, bait and snacks. This is the biggest event of
the year, a good time is had by all.
Fishing Classes:
The club
holds a Salmon fishing classes, Fly tying classes and Rod building classes every winter during Jan., Feb. and Mar. (see fishing
classes page)
Conservation Camp:
In July the Poggie Club sends four
kids from 14 to 16 years old to the Washington State Conservation Camp. This is a great learning experience for young adults.
Camp Easter Seal:
During the summer club members assist Camp Easter Seal staff take
camp residents fishing. Poggie Club members that have participated really enjoyed the outing.
Salmon
Bake and Silent Auction:
At the end of July we have our salmon bake and silent auction at Jars
tad Park in Gorst, Wa. The salmon bake is a pot luck with the club providing salmon and beverages. The auction is fun with
lots of interesting items.
Fish Viewing:
In sept. we hold a fish
viewing weekend at Jarstad Park. We show the public the returning salmon from our fish rearing projects. At the same time
Poggie Club volunteers our counting and checking salmon for coded wire tags in their noses at the fish trap before the salmon
are released upstream. This event needs lots of volunteers.
Christmas Party:
We have a Christmas dinner pot luck at our Dec. meeting. The club provides turkey, ham and beverages for the dinner.
There will be Santa there with presents for the children and we give away approx 30 door prizes.
Other:
- Club members assist at the Grover Creek Hatchery during the salmon runs.
- Poggies assist
the 4th grade at Sunnyslope School with the Salmon in the class room project.
- We sponsor charter
trips for salmon and sturgen at Ilwoco, Wa.
- The club has local charter trips for club members
at reduced rates.
- We publish a monthly news letter.
